The Butler Libraries have just subscribed to a new database called Literary Criticism Online. This database indexes the Gale sets of Literary Criticism books (the large sets of brown or blue books in the Irwin Library Reference collection), including the following titles:

  • Contemporary Literary Criticism (all volumes)

Technical Problem with PressDisplay

If you are using PressDisplay from off campus (or on campus but using wireless), you must log in through EZ-Proxy to access this or most other databases.

We are currently experiencing a technical problem with PressDisplay, where the main newspaper image will not display. This only occurs when accessing PressDisplay using EZ-Proxy. We are aware of the problem and are working to fix it as soon as possible. We will post another message here when this problem is eliminated. Thank you for your patience.

Open Access Journals

A new database that is available on the Library Website is the Directory of Open Access Journals. This database covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals with the aim to cover all subjects and languages.
  • There are now 2,433 journals in the directory.
  • Currently 714 journals are searchable at article level.
  • As of today 119,344 articles are included in the DOAJ service.
Open Access Journals are peer-reviewed or editorial-quality journals that are freely available online. They define open access journals as journals that use a funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access. From the BOAI definition of "open access", they won't include a journal in the directory unless the users have the right to "read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts" of the articles.

Journals can be browsed by subject or searched by keyword. Once you get to the journal, you can browse by issue/year or even search some of the journals for a keyword in a particular article. These are online journals being made open-access by their publishers via their own websites, so the features and functions will vary.

EBSCO - Saving Your Searches

How would you like to go into an EBSCO Database and not have to re-create your search?

EBSCO Databases allow you to save your search results once you've created a profile in their system. That is DIFFERENT from your Butler profile. It involves actually creating a new account with EBSCO. You will use that account to access your saved search results. Go into any EBSCO database and click on "Sign In to My EBSCOhost" to get started.

Once you've done that and created your own profile in EBSCOhost, you can save and reexamine your searches in "My Folder."

If you have any questions or problems using "My EBSCOhost," please contact a Reference Librarian.

It is a complete list of all our career resources. Better still, most titles can now be checked out by students.

Industry Norms & Business Ratios

To all:

Business students who are looking for industry statistics (or similar phraseology) with which to compare to a particular business (or businesses) should see:

Industry Norms & Key Business Ratios: REF DESK HF 5681 .R25 I53 03-04

Despite what students may have heard (or misinterpreted) we do not have industry norms/ratios in electronic format.

However, you can compare company to company norms & ratios in Research Insight, and to a lesser extent in Market Insight (peer group, etc.). See Business Databases.

Introducing NAXOS!

Want to listen to music online? For free? We have added a database to our collection of academic databases that allows that very thing!

The Naxos Music Library is an online collection of music that includes the complete Naxos, Marco Polo, and Dacapo catalogues of over 85,000 tracks. Genres covered include Classical, Jazz, World, Folk and Chinese music.

The database also provides access to notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists. All these are accessible from computers on and off campus by signing on with your Butler user name and password.

The subscription currently limits us to 3 simultaneous users, so if you cannot get in, please try again in a few minutes. Also, when you're done listening, please click "Log Off" before you close the window, so another user can get in more quickly.

If you have any questions about Naxos, please contact our Reference Desk or Sheri Stormes, our Music & Fine Arts Librarian.

The State of the ERIC Database, Fall 2005

The ERIC database overhaul is still an incomplete project as the fall semester begins.  In recent weeks, they have begun to add newer material (2004) to the ERIC site, but until Ebsco signs an agreement with ERIC, no articles or documents newer than 2003 will show up in Ebsco ERIC.  A quick check of the journals currently indexed by ERIC shows that only a small percentage of the publishers of titles previously indexed by ERIC have reached an agreement with ERIC to allow indexing of their recent issues.  For now, advise everyone to make sure that they search Professional Development Collection as well as ERIC to maximize the number of current journal articles found on education topics.  The good news is that eventually, there should be much more full text  available in ERIC.  When the contractor finally finishes adding the backfile, content should be within a month of current. I have no idea how long it will take to reach that goal.
